European Energy and SONFOR have received the green light to construct the Lillebaelt Syd offshore park in Denmark.

Copenhagen, Denmark, 28th of November – The construction permit for the Lillebaelt Syd offshore wind project has been issued by the Danish Energy Agency. The project is located in the Strait of Lillebaelt close to the city of Soenderborg in Denmark. The project will have a capacity of 165 MW.

The Lillebaelt Syd project is co-developed by European Energy and the Danish utility company SONFOR.

The two offshore project is planned to begin operation in 2029. The total amount of electricity generated from the offshore wind parks is expected to be equivalent to the electricity consumption of around 148,000 European households.

“We are delighted to finally secure the construction permits for this important offshore park. This marks a milestone for European Energy and positions us as a leading developer of offshore wind in Denmark and the Nordics,” says Knud Erik Andersen, CEO of European Energy.

“Lillebaelt Syd is a showcase of how public-private partnership can take responsibility locally and act on climate change. From the very start, the project should support the green transformation and contribute to Soenderborg municipality’s efforts to get net zero carbon by 2029. With the establishment permit in hand, we can celebrate the result of 14 years of hard work, co-operation and dialog with the local community,” says Ellen Trane Nørby, Chair of SONFOR.

Regarding local support for the projects, the institute MEGAFON conducted a survey in the municipalities of Sønderborg and Assens, near the Lillebaelt Syd project. The results revealed strong backing, with 80% support in Sønderborg and 69% in Assens.

Earlier this year, European Energy, SONFOR and the energy company TotalEnergies signed an agreement where TotalEnergies will become the majority owner of the Lillebaelt Syd project.
