Iberdrola Germany and SCHWENK Zement GmbH & Co. KG have entered into a long-term cooperation agreement for the supply of green electricity from the Windanker offshore wind farm, currently under construction in the Baltic Sea. The agreement will provide SCHWENK with 1,500 GWh of green electricity over the duration of the contract. This supply will help SCHWENK meet approximately 20% of its electricity needs from certified renewable sources, a significant portion based on the company’s current electricity consumption.
With a fixed-price agreement in place, both companies secure long-term planning stability. Thomas Spannagl, CEO of SCHWENK Building Materials Group, highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, emphasizing efforts to reduce electricity demand, improve energy efficiency, and lower CO2 emissions. He further stated, “The partnership with Iberdrola sends a clear signal of our commitment to sustainability, and we are proud to significantly increase our share of green electricity.”
Felipe Montero, CEO of Iberdrola Germany, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting, “Supplying the German industry with green electricity is a central element of our strategy in Germany. This long-term collaboration with SCHWENK, a family-owned business with a clear vision for the future, is a significant milestone. We aim to help more industrial companies achieve their climate goals.”
Windanker: A New Milestone in Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub
The Windanker offshore wind farm, part of Iberdrola’s broader strategy in the Baltic Sea, will feature 21 turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW. The wind farm is expected to be connected to the grid by 2026, with a total connection capacity of 300 MW. Located approximately 38 km northeast of the German island of Rügen, Windanker will cover an area of 17.9 km².
This project is Iberdrola’s third offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea, following the successful operational launch of the Wikinger wind farm in 2017 and the ongoing development of the Baltic Eagle project. Together, these wind farms form the Iberdrola Baltic Hub, which will have a combined capacity of over 1.1 GW by 2026. With a planned investment of around €3.7 billion, Iberdrola is set to become the largest operator of offshore wind farms in the German Baltic Sea.
In addition to its offshore initiatives, Iberdrola Germany is also active in planning, constructing, and operating onshore wind farms and photovoltaic projects, further strengthening its position in the renewable energy sector.
