In a recent LinkedIn post, Sven Utermöhlen, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Offshore Wind, provided an update on RWE’s offshore wind activities in Continental Europe. The company currently operates nine offshore wind farms, has three projects under construction, and has secured two additional sites. These developments strengthen RWE’s role in Europe’s clean energy transition.
Germany has a central position in RWE’s offshore wind portfolio. The company operates six offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of over 2 gigawatts. Among them are Arkona and Kaskasi, which are the largest offshore wind farms in Continental Europe. Each of these projects generates enough electricity to power around 400,000 German households.
RWE’s presence in Germany includes Alpha Ventus, the country’s first offshore wind farm, which remains part of its portfolio. The company is preparing for further expansion with the Nordseecluster, a 1.6-gigawatt project set to begin construction this year. Additionally, RWE is working with TotalEnergies to develop two large offshore wind sites, contributing to the growth of offshore wind energy in Germany.
In Sweden and Denmark, RWE has been operating offshore wind farms for more than a decade. The Kårehamn wind farm in Sweden and Rødsand 2 in Denmark have been supplying electricity for 13 and 15 years, respectively. These sites serve as important hubs of technical expertise. One example is the use of an onshore test bench that helps diagnose and prevent electrical failures. RWE is also advancing offshore wind development in Denmark with the construction of Thor, which will become the country’s largest offshore wind farm. Construction will take place over the course of this year.
Belgium and the Netherlands also play a significant role in RWE’s offshore wind portfolio. The Thornton Bank wind farm has been supplying electricity to Belgium for over 15 years. In the Netherlands, RWE recently started construction on OranjeWind, a 795-megawatt project that will provide electricity for more than one million Dutch households.
Sven Utermöhlen emphasizes that continued growth in offshore wind energy requires political support and stable investment conditions. He highlights the need for transparent auction criteria that balance risk and return for developers, such as two-sided Contracts for Difference (CfDs). He also points to the importance of a resilient supply chain to meet the increasing demand for offshore wind infrastructure.
Sven Utermöhlen sums it up: “It is an exciting time. These are exciting markets,” Utermöhlen concludes. “#TeamRWE delivers.”
With its ongoing expansion and new projects, RWE continues to play an important role in Europe’s transition to clean energy.
