Seven potential connection points for offshore wind power have been identified in mainland Finland for the 2030s. These enable the connection of up to 9 gigawatts of offshore wind power capacity to the main grid. The identified connection points are located on the west coast and in Inkoo. The northernmost connection points, in the Kokkola and Raahe areas, are possible if electricity consumption in the area increases significantly before the offshore wind power connections are realized.

This report is a continuation of the study published in May 2024 on the preliminary connection possibilities for offshore wind power to the mainland Finland transmission grid. The study has been updated, based on a stakeholder consultation held in early summer and additional analyses, and refined to present the preliminary connection points for offshore wind power at the substation level.

Seven potential connection points for offshore wind power have been identified in mainland Finland for the 2030s. They are located at Inkoo, Raisio, Ulvila, Närpiö, Vaasa, Kokkola and Raahe regions.

The most significant changes since the May publication are the addition of a completely new potential offshore wind power connection point in the Kokkola area and the introduction of alternative connection points and schedules in Southwest Finland. The northernmost connection points are possible in the 2030s if electricity consumption in the area increases significantly from the current level before the implementation of offshore wind power connections.

In total, the implementation of these seven offshore wind power connections has been modeled to require approximately €0.7 billion in transmission grid reinforcement investments, in addition to Fingrid’s ongoing investment program of approximately €4 billion.

These are still preliminary connection possibilities. Fingrid has not made investment decisions on the network reinforcements required to implement these offshore wind power connections based on this study. We maintain the readiness to connect offshore wind power to the transmission grid at designated substations and will evaluate the implementation of the necessary network investments as part of the main grid development plan published every two years. The progress of offshore wind project development will be considered alongside other customer projects as part of the development plan update.
