The Baltic Power project, which is one of the most important undertakings in the Polish renewable energy sector, has reached an important milestone. The construction of two offshore substations for the wind farm, which were manufactured at the Baltic Industrial Group shipyards in Gdynia and Gdansk, has been completed. The structures have already been loaded onto a barge and sailed to the port of Aalborg in Denmark, where they will undergo the outfitting phase.
The offshore stations will play a key role in transmitting energy from 76 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW, from the Baltic Power wind farm to onshore infrastructure. Once operational, the Baltic Power project will provide clean energy to more than 1.5 million households, forming an important part of Poland’s drive to meet its green energy targets.
The structures were transported on a barge using SPMT (Self-Propelled Modular Transport) platforms and set sail for Denmark. In Aalborg, the stations will be fitted with key components such as main transformers, high-voltage switchgear and control systems, ensuring readiness for operation at sea. This phase is being overseen by Semco Maritime, which is responsible for outfitting the stations, and the entire process is scheduled for completion in 2026.
Once the outfitting is complete, the stations will return to the Baltic Sea, where they will be installed 23 kilometres off the coast of the Choczewo municipality. The installation will be the next step in the project, and commissioning of the wind farm and its commissioning is expected to take place in early 2026.
The Baltic Power wind farm is not only an engineering achievement, but also an important element in Poland’s energy transition. The project demonstrates the growing importance of offshore wind energy in meeting climate and energy security goals.
Semco Maritime expressed pride in the progress to date, thanking the team for their commitment and attention to safety over the past two years. The offshore station outfitting phase is another important step towards the realisation of one of the most important energy projects in the region.
