The Latvian Cabinet of Ministers approved the 200 km2 research site of ELWIND offshore wind park – as highlighted by ELWIND offshore in a recent LinkedIn post.
Taking into account the information obtained from the Dabas aizsardzības pārvalde/Nature Conservation Agency of Latvia, the originally selected study area has been moved more than 7 km further offshore to reduce biodiversity risks and to avoid overlapping with an area that could be designated as a marine protected area in the future. With this step, ELWIND seeks to balance the interests of energy, nature conservation, and coastal residents.
The project is aimed at developing two offshore wind energy sites – one in Latvian territory and one in Estonian territory – and establishing the fourth electricity interconnection between Latvia and Estonia. The project aims to enhance energy security in the region and promote the use of renewable resources for electricity generation.
